Aromatherapy oils are chosen that work on several levels, mental, physical and psychological. Essential oils lend themselves to a sensitive and subtle approach for each one has many properties, which is unlike synthetic drugs. Aromatherapists can look beyond the physical application of the oils to help the whole person balance mind, body and spirit to attain holistic health.
Essential Oils can be applied to the skin in the form of massage, as during an aromatherapy massage the aromatic molecules of the essential oils will have a therapeutic effect both through inhalation and through absorption into the skin. This absorption process continues after the massage has ended.
They can also be used in the following ways:
Bath - Oils can be dispersed in this way to created continuous treatment from the massage. The therapist may have given them a blend or oil to take away with them. Adding a total of 3-5 drops to a full bath, but making sure you remember to agitate the water first to disperse the oil, can be very therapeutic. While in the bath, a small amount of oil can be absorbed by the skin, and the rest is evaporated into the air and inhaled helping the client to heal even more. Stay in the bath for as least ten minutes for maximum effect. Take care to avoid any oils that may be irritating to the skin.
Hand and Foot Baths - These methods will be helpful for swelling, pain, infections, injuries, heat rash or athletes’ foot, all that cannot be massaged. 10 minutes in a hand or foot bath containing the appropriate oils should soon bring relief. Footbaths can also be used to relieve headaches or other minor ailments, because of the effect of the oils on the foot reflexes. This method can also help people that are not very mobile.
Inhalation - There are many methods of inhalation. Some oils such as eucalyptus are suitable for this but make sure you only use 3-5 drops as too much could sting your eyes. This is ideal for colds, flu, and any respiratory infection. Add the drops to a bowl of very hot water but not boiling, and inhale the vapour for 5-10 mins. If this method is not suitable you could put a few drops onto a tissue, making sure it won’t be in direct contact with the skin. This way it can be inhaled by taking deep breaths from it, it could be put inside the person’s shirt or blouse so body heat can continue to disperse the oils being inhaled. If you are asthmatic you may have an allergic reaction due to the combination of oils and steam or it could catch your breath. You may benefit more from the tissue method or from your hands by the emergency method – which is putting one drop of oil onto your hands and rubbing hands together to warm it before cupping them and inhaling.
Compress (Hot or Cold) - An effective way to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, usually from sprains, strains, insect bites, toothache, earache, arthritis, abscesses, period pains, headaches, varicose veins etc. For sharp pains with heat i.e. the sprains and strains etc, the cold compresses with ice are better to reduce the inflammation, but with dull aches, a hot compress is advisable. A hot compress is made by filling the bowl with hot water and dipping a clean flannel or cotton cloth into the bowl, wringing out excess water and placing on affected area. Both compresses should have enough essential oils put in first depending on the size of the area to be treated- for a finger 2 drops should suffice, but for abdominal pain-up to 8 drops is needed. Remember also to stir well to disperse the oil before dipping your cloth/flannel in the fluid.
Vaporiser - The antiseptic and evaporative properties of all essential oils make them ideal room fresheners. They may be used to create an ambience, mood or atmosphere-uplifting, relaxing or refreshing to suit the need of the moment or occasion. They can be used effectively in clearing out infected households of airborne germs from a recent viral illness, cold or flu, with the whole family benefiting. Different methods can be used by either oil burners using tea light candles, or light bulb rings or a diffuser or electric vaporiser. You could also use a tissue with a few drops of oil on a radiator in the winter.
Topical Application - Pure essential oils should not be used on the skin unless diluted in a vegetable oil or lotion base. For application dilute up to 5 drops of oil per 10mls of base oil or lotion. The blend or cream should be shaken and stirred thoroughly and then labelled so you can record it, also so you do not forget what you have used as the client may wish the same cream or blend again. These creams and blends are ideal for treating certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, insect bites etc, depending on what the condition is and what oils are used.
